Genesis is one of New Zealand’s largest energy retailers and generators. Genesis supplies electricity, gas and LPG. Genesis serves over 650,000 customers nationwide.
Genesis owns and operates a diverse range of generation assets, including hydro, wind and thermal power stations. Its generation portfolio enables it to contribute significantly to New Zealand’s overall electricity supply, with a mix of renewable and non-renewable sources.
The New Zealand Government holds a 51% shareholding in Genesis Energy, with the remaining shares publicly listed on the New Zealand stock exchange (NZX).

Genesis offers energy discounts for:
- receiving your bill by email rather than through the mail
- paying by direct debit
- dual fuel – signing up for both electricity and gas.
- signing up for a fixed-term contract.
Special offers
- Eligible customers get ‘Power Shouts’ - free electricity with you deciding when is best to use it.
- Eligible EV customers get a 50% discount on their variable household electricity rates from 9pm to 7am. Night rates on the Energy EV plan apply between the hours of 9pm – 7am, 7 days a week and only to the Genesis variable rates portion of your plan. The Energy EV plan night rates are 50% lower than the day rates. Night rates do not apply to the daily fixed portion of your plan or to any appliances under a controlled meter configuration. Note: Genesis does not offer natural gas as a stand-alone product for new customers. To sign up for natural gas, you must also have your electricity supply with Genesis (dual fuel).
Genesis offers a solar buy-back rate of 12.5c/kWh (excluding GST) for home and business connections that supply exported electricity to the grid.

Complaints
If you have a complaint, contact Genesis Energy as soon as possible. Its customer service team will work to resolve your issue promptly. You can view its resolution process here.

Vulnerable and medically dependent customers
Genesis will not disconnect the power supply for unpaid bills for customers who have been verified as medically dependent.

Customers can view detailed information about their power usage via the Energy IQ app.
Contact Genesis to request up to the last 24 months of your electricity consumption data. You can choose either:
- a summarised report – the consumption data recorded on each of your bills or
- a detailed report – the consumption data in its most detailed format.
